Taxonomy
Phacops caffer was named by Salter (1856) [lecotype designated by Cooper 1982.]. Its type specimen is BM-In28620 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Metacryphaeus caffer by Reed (1907); it was recombined as Metacryphaeus (Metacryphaeus) caffer by Cooper (1982).
