Tritonium whitneyi was named by Gabb (1864).

It was recombined as Nyctilochus whitneyi by Dickerson (1916); it was recombined as Latirus whitneyi by Anderson and Hanna (1925); it was recombined as Murex whitneyi by Stewart (1927); it was recombined as Muricopsis whitneyi by Vokes (1939).
