Taxonomy

Tritonium whitneyi was named by Gabb (1864).

It was recombined as Nyctilochus whitneyi by Dickerson (1916); it was recombined as Latirus whitneyi by Anderson and Hanna (1925); it was recombined as Murex whitneyi by Stewart (1927); it was recombined as Muricopsis whitneyi by Vokes (1939).

Synonyms

Murex beali was named by Anderson and Hanna (1925). Its type specimen is CAS 837 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CAS loc. 244, Live Oak Canyon, which is in an Eocene marginal marine sandstone/shale in the Tejon Formation of California.

It was synonymized subjectively with Murex whitneyi by Stewart (1927).
