Taxonomy
Murphitys corona was named by Popenoe and Saul (1987). Its type specimen is LACMIP 7273, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is CIT loc. 1053, Santiago Creek, which is in a Campanian marine siliciclastic in the Ladd Formation of California.

W. P. Popenoe and L. R. Saul 1987Plump Murphitys which have a doubly subangulate periphery demarked by the two strongest spiral ribs. The outer lip bears about five nearly equal denticulations.
