Taxonomy
Murphitys madonna was named by Popenoe and Saul (1987). Its type specimen is SDSNH 25958, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is SDNHM Loc. 3162-A - approximately 6.1 m below a calcareous marker bed, which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian marginal marine /sandstone in the Point Loma Formation of California.
