Taxonomy
Microcardium was named by Thiele (1934) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 1112]. It is extant. Its type is Cardium (Fulvia) peramabilis.

It was reranked as Nemocardium (Microcardium) by Vokes (1989) and Schneider (1995).

It was assigned to Nemocardium by Vokes (1989) and Schneider (1995); to Veneroida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Protocardiinae by Vokes (1980), Woodring (1982) and Poutiers (2006).
