Nuculites lirata was named by Conrad (1842).

It was recombined as Nucula (Nuculoidea) lirata by Shimer and Shrock (1944); it was recombined as Nucula lirata by Ellison (1965); it was recombined as Nuculoidea lirata by Pojeta et al. (1986).
