Hamites obstrictus was named by Jimbo (1894).

It was recombined as Diplomoceras obstrictum by Anderson (1958); it was recombined as Polyptychoceras obstrictum by Matsumoto (1959); it was recombined as Polyptychoceras (Polyptychoceras) obstrictum by Wright et al. (1996).
