Pugnellus hamulus was named by Gabb (1864).

It was recombined as Conchothyra hamula by Stewart (1927); it was recombined as Pugnellus (Gymnarus) hamulus by Anderson (1958); it was recombined as Pyktes hamulus by Popenoe (1983).
