Conus hayesi was named by Arnold (1909). Its type specimen is USNM 165566 and is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Conus (Lithoconus) hayesi by Addicott (1970); it was recombined as Pyruconus hayesi by Stadum and Finger (2016).
