Spirifer crenistria was named by Phillips (1836).

It was recombined as Leptaena crenistria by McCoy (1855); it was recombined as Streptorhynchus crenistria by Davidson (1860) and Davidson (1861); it was recombined as Hemipronites crenistria by Meek (1877); it was recombined as Orthothetes crenistria by Mansuy (1912) and Mansuy (1912).
