Tenuitella was named by Fleisher (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R]. It is extant. Its type is Globorotalia gemma.

It was assigned to Globigerinidae by Wienrich (1997); to Foraminiferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Globigerinitidae by Lam and Leckie (2020).
