Xenocheilos spineum was named by Wilson (1951) [non Xenocheilos spineum; Wilson 1951 pl. 95, figs 17 [Xenocheilos sp. indet.]

non Xenocheilos spineum; Kurtz 1975, p. 1033, pl. 4, figs 27-29 [fig. 27 = Xenocheilos sp. indet.; fig. 28 = gen indet.; fig. 29 = Cliffia sp.].]. Its type specimen is YPM 18509, a cephalon/head (cranidium), and it is a 3D body fossil.
