Enaliosauri was named by Parkinson (1822).

It was corrected as Enaliosaurii by Bonaparte (1850); it was reranked as the order Enaliosauria by Owen (1859); it was corrected as Enaliosauria by Owen (1840), Owen (1842), Mantell (1854) and Jaekel (1910).

It was assigned to Saurii by Parkinson (1822); to Rhizodonta by Bonaparte (1850); to Sauria by Owen (1859); and to Reptilia by Owen (1840), Owen (1842), Mantell (1854), Owen (1861) and Jaekel (1910).
