Kinishbia was named by Winters (1956) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon Sepkoski's reference number: 1]. Its type is Kinishbia nodosa.

It was assigned to Kinishbiinae by Golikov and Starobogatov (1987); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeostylinae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
