Cardium multicostatum was named by Brocchi (1814).

It was recombined as Trachycardium multicostatum by Sacco (1899); it was recombined as Cardium (Trachycardium) multicostatum by Cerulli Irelli (1908); it was recombined as Laevicardium (Trachycardium) multicostatum by Rossi Ronchetti (1952); it was recombined as Europicardium multicostatum by Popov (1977), Schneider (2002) and La Perna (2016).
