Knightella was named by Longstaff (1933) [Sepkoski's age data: C Vise-u Sepkoski's reference number: 797].

It was assigned to Pseudozygopleurinae by Knight et al. (1960); to Orthonemidae by Nützel and Bandel (2000); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
