Taxonomy
Macroclemys auffenbergi was named by Dobie (1968). Its type specimen is UF 10992, a partial skeleton (associated carapace, plastron, skull, cervical vertebrae, and limb bones), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is McGehee Farm, which is in a Hemphillian terrestrial horizon in the Alachua Formation of Florida.

It was recombined as Macrochelys auffenbergi by Hutchison (2008), Thomas et al. (2014) and Joyce (2016).
