Ostrea lingua was named by Sowerby (1840) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Miocene; Indonesia, Pakistan.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Ostrea (Ostrea) lingua by Skwarko (1994); it was recombined as Gyrostrea lingua by Casadio (1998).
