Taxonomy
Nyctosaurus was named by Marsh (1876). It is the type genus of Nyctosaurinae, Nyctosauridae.
It was replaced with Nyctodactylus by Zittel (1890); it was reranked as Pteranodon (Nyctosaurus) by Miller (1971).
It was assigned to Nyctosauridae by Hay (1902); to Nyctosaurinae by Williston (1903) and Hay (1930); to Ornithocheiridae by Young (1964) and Charig (1967); to Pteranodon by Miller (1971); to Pteranodontidae by Schoch (1984); to Nyctosauridae by Bennett (1989) and Murry et al. (1991); to Pteranodontia by Unwin (2003); to Pterodactyloidea by Headden and Campos (2014); and to Ornithocheiroidea by Unwin and Lü (1997) and Andres et al. (2014).
It was replaced with Nyctodactylus by Zittel (1890); it was reranked as Pteranodon (Nyctosaurus) by Miller (1971).
