Turfanodon was named by Sun (1973). Its type is Turfanodon bogdaensis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Dicynodon by Li and Sun (2008).

It was assigned to Dicynodontidae by Sun (1973); and to Dicynodontoidea by Kammerer et al. (2011) and Liu (2021).
