Propliopithecus chirobates
Taxonomy
Aeolopithecus chirobates was named by Simons (1965). Its type specimen is CGM 26923, a mandible (complete horizontal rami of mandible fused at symphysis with incisor alveoli and left and right C-M3), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Quarry I (Jebel Qatrani Formation), which is in a Rupelian fluvial sandstone/mudstone in the Jebel Qatrani Formation of Egypt.
It was synonymized subjectively with Propliopithecus haeckeli by Gingerich (1978); it was recombined as Propliopithecus chirobates by Simons et al. (2007).
