Liocium was named by Gabb (1869) [Sepkoski's age data: K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. Its type is Liocium punctatum.

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Pseudomelaniidae by Squires and Saul (2003).

R. L. Squires and L. R. Saul 2003Shell small, elongate tear-drop. Upper spire whorls flat, more mature whorls somewhat convex. Shell glossy and smooth or with complex, wrinkled-looking sculpture. Aperture ovate, anteriorly notched and posteriorly acute.
