P. Mein and M. Freudenthal 1971A l'intérieur du genre Megacricetodon, le sous-genre nominatif se distingue du sous-genre Collongomys par les caractères suivents:
En vue occlusale le foramen mentale de la mandibule est visible, il apparaît labialement d'une droite tangente au bord lingual de la m2.
La longeur relative de la m1 par rapport à la m3 est grande (chiffres trouvés 1,31 à 1,64, avec une moyenne de 1,52); la m3 est relativement le plus réduite chez les espèces de grande taille.
L'incisive inférieur, à face antérieur régulierement convex, est lisse.
