Lunatia was named by Gray (1847) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti R Sepkoski's reference number: 123,157]. It is extant.

It was reranked as Natica (Lunatia) by de Gregorio (1890); it was reranked as Polinices (Lunatia) by Dall (1892); it was reranked as Polynices (Lunatia) by Martin (1904); it was synonymized subjectively with Euspira by Kabat (1991).

It was assigned to Natica by de Gregorio (1890); to Polinices by Dall (1892); to Polynices by Martin (1904); to Naticidae by Olsson (1931), Marasti (1973) and Ward and Blackwelder (1987); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
