Septibranchia was named by Pelseneer (1888) [COMMENTS: Spelt Septibranchia in Bieler and Mikkelson 2006; Septibranchida in Coan et al. 2000 multiple times; was entered as Septibranchoidea, with a superfamily affix.]. It is extant.
It was reranked as the superorder Septibranchia by Nevesskaja (2009); it was reranked as the unranked clade Septibranchia by Bieler and Mikkelsen (2006), Bouchet et al. (2010) and Hickman (2014).
It was assigned to Anomalodesmata by Ward and Blackwelder (1987) and Coan et al. (2000); to Heterodonta by Bieler and Mikkelsen (2006); to Bivalvia by Nevesskaja (2009); to Pholadomyida by Bouchet et al. (2010); and to Anomalodesmata by Hickman (2014).
