Hilalia was named by Maas et al. (2001). Its type is Hilalia saribeya. It was considered monophyletic by Métais et al. (2017).
It was assigned to Condylarthra by Maas et al. (2001); and to Pleuraspidotheriidae by Ladevèze et al. (2010), Métais et al. (2012), Métais et al. (2017) and Halliday et al. (2017).
