Nucula puelcha was named by d'Orbigny (1842) [DISTRIBUTION: Holocene-Recent; South Atlantic.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Nucula (Ennucula) puelcha by da Silva Forti (1969); it was recombined as Ennucula puelcha by Clavijo et al. (2005), Massemin et al. (2009) and Huber (2010).
