Taxonomy
Stenasteridae was named by Schuchert (1914). It is not extant. Its type is Stenaster. It is the type family of Stenasteracea. It was considered monophyletic by Dean Shackleton (2005).

It was assigned to Stenasteracea by Schuchert (1915); to Asterozoa by Spencer (1927); to Eophiuricae by Spencer (1951) and Owen (1965); to Parophiurina by Spencer and Wright (1966); and to Ophiuroidea by Dean Shackleton (2005).
