Metacerithium was named by Cossmann (1906) [Sepkoski's age data: K Nc T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 794]. It is the type genus of Metacerithinae.

It was assigned to Metacerithinae by Cossmann (1906); to Metacerithiinae by Allison (1955); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Metacerithiidae by Bouchet et al. (2005).
