Cardium muricatum was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Holocene-Recent; Western Atlantic.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Cardium (Trachycardium) muricatum by Dall (1900); it was recombined as Trachycardium (Dallocardia) muricatum by da Silva Forti (1969); it was recombined as Trachycardium muricatum by Hendy et al. (2008).
