Pseudotaphrus (Microtaphrus) was named by Cossmann (1888) [Sepkoski's age data: T Than Sepkoski's reference number: 794]. Its type is Pseudotaphrus (Microtaphrus) proavius.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pseudotaphrus by Ponder (1984); it was reranked as Microtaphrus by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995) and Sepkoski (2002).

It was assigned to Pseudotaphrus by Cossmann (1888); to Rissoininae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
