Motyris was named by Eames (1952) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-m T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 914]. Its type is Turritella (Tomyris) aralica.

It was assigned to Pareorinae by Allmon (1996); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
