Stephopoma was named by Mörch (1860). It is extant. It is the type genus of Stephopomatinae.
It was assigned to Stephopomatinae by Bandel and Kowalke (1998) and Bouchet et al. (2005); and to Siliquariidae by Rosenberg et al. (2006).
