Mya arenaria was named by Linnaeus (1758) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Pliocene-Recent; Arctic Ocean-Florida.]. It is extant.

It was recombined as Mya (Arenomya) arenaria by Abbott (1974) and Kafanov et al. (2001).
