Amphithalamus was named by Carpenter (1864) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 557]. It is extant. Its type is Amphithalamus inclusus.

It was assigned to Rissoidae by Ladd (1966); to Anabathrinae by Ponder (1983); to Barleeidae by Lozouet (1998); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).
