Orectospira was named by Dall (1925) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo R Sepkoski's reference number: 158]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Orectospirinae.
It was assigned to Margaritinae by MacNeil (1960); to Turritellopsinae by Allmon (1996); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Orectospirinae by Habe (1955) and Bouchet et al. (2005).
