Orthochetus was named by Cossmann (1889) [Sepkoski's age data: K Apti-l T Eo-u Sepkoski's reference number: 122,530]. Its type is Cerithium leufroyi.

It was assigned to Cerithiadae by Pacaud and Le Renard (1995); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cerithiidae by Darragh (2011) and Darragh (2017).
