Venericardia elegans was named by Lamarck (1806) [DISTRIBUTION: Cenozoic; Western Europe.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Cardita elegans by Nyst (1843); it was recombined as Cardita (Venericardia) elegans by Deshayes (1860); it was recombined as Cyclocardia (Arcturellina) elegans by Le Renard (1993).
