Lagenorhynchus clanculus was named by Gray (1846). It is extant.

It was recombined as Electra clanculus by Gray (1868); it was recombined as Electra clancula by Gray (1873); it was synonymized subjectively with Lagenorhynchus cruciger by Hershkovitz (1966) and Jefferson (2021).
