Pietteia was named by Cossmann (1904) [Sepkoski's age data: J Sine K Apti Sepkoski's reference number: 1074].

It was assigned to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); to Aporrhaidae by Kase (1984), Conti and Szabó (1989) and Kaim (2004); and to Dimorphosominae by Kollmann (2009).
