Velociraptorichnus was named by Zhen et al. (1994). It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type is Velociraptorichnus sichuanensis.
It was assigned to Dromaeosauridae by Zhen et al. (1994) and Li et al. (2006); to Deinonychosauria by Li et al. (2011); and to Dromaeopodidae by Li et al. (2007), Xing et al. (2009) and Apesteguía et al. (2011).
