Taxonomy
Thoralaster was named by Dean Shackleton (2005). It is not extant. Its type is Thoralaster spiculiformis. It was considered monophyletic by Dean Shackleton (2005).

It was assigned to Somasteroidea by Blake (2013); and to Chinianasteridae by Dean Shackleton (2005) and Blake and Guensburg (2015).
