Taxonomy
Palaeocoma (Rhopalocoma) pyrotechnica was named by Salter (1857). It is not extant. Its type specimen is Neotype BMNH 40293. It is the type species of Palaeocoma (Rhopalocoma).

It was recombined as Rhopalocoma pyrotechnica by Schuchert (1915), Spencer (1940), Owen (1965), Spencer and Wright (1966), Dean Shackleton (2005) and Lewis et al. (2007).
