Taxonomy
Venericardia rotunda was named by Lea (1833) [m. kosnik taxon no: 6929]. It is not a trace fossil. It is the type species of Venericardia (Rotundicardia).

It was recombined as Cardita rotunda by Conrad (1834) and Heilprin (1879); it was recombined as Venericardia (Venericardia) rotunda by Palmer and Brann (1965); it was recombined as Venericardia (Rotundicardia) rotunda by Woodring (1982).
