Presbytis was named by Eschscholtz (1821). It is extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pygathrix by Elliot (1910).

It was assigned to Presbytina by Gray (1825); to Cercopithecidae by Hooijer (1962), Hooijer (1962) and McKenna and Bell (1997); to Colobidae by Jablonski (2002); and to Colobinae by Wilson and Reeder (2005) and Osterholz et al. (2008).
