Mytilus mathewsoni was named by Gabb (1869) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Oligocene; Pacific Coast, North America.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was corrected as Mytilus mathewsonii by Arnold (1907); it was recombined as Mytilus (Mytiloconcha) mathewsonii by Clark (1918); it was recombined as Crenomytilus mathewsoni by Addicott (1973).
