Mytilus mathewsoni expansus was named by Arnold (1907) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Oligocene; Pacific Coast, North America.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Mytilus expansus by Loel and Corey (1932); it was recombined as Crenomytilus expansus by Addicott (1973).
