Chione whitneyi was named by Gabb (1866) [DISTRIBUTION: Late Oligocene; Pacific Coast, North America.]. It is not a trace fossil.

It was recombined as Dosinia (Dosinidia) whitneyi by Clark (1918); it was recombined as Dosinia whitneyi by Addicott (1972); it was recombined as Dosinia (Dosinia) whitneyi by Addicott (1973).
