Proscala was named by Cossmann (1912) [Sepkoski's age data: K Haut T Dani Sepkoski's reference number: 157,914]. Its type is Scalaria albensis.

It was reranked as Acirsa (Proscala) by Durham (1937).

It was assigned to Acirsa by Durham (1937); to Epitoniidae by Beu et al. (1990); to Nystiellidae by Kiel (2001); and to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002).

S. Kiel 2001The high spired shell has little convex volutions with varix-like axial ribs and fine spiral striae. Sutures are constricted and show a basal plate.
