Proterato was named by Schilder (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: T Eo-u R Sepkoski's reference number: 530]. It is extant. Its type is Erato neozelanica.

It was reranked as Lachryma (Proterato) by Cernohorsky (1971); it was misspelled as Proerato by Cate (1977), Wilson (1993), Sepkoski (2002) and Héros et al. (2007).

It was assigned to Lachryma by Cernohorsky (1971); to Eratoidae by Cate (1977); to Neotaenioglossa by Sepkoski (2002); and to Eratoinae by Wilson (1993) and Héros et al. (2007).

W. O. Cernohorsky 1971Species of Proterato differ from Lachryma s.str. only in the absence of surface sculpture and a slightly deeper and more produced fossula. Species of Proterato are confined to Eocene-Pliocene deposits of Australia and New Zealand.
